Characterization of antibiotic resistance in Salmonella enterica isolates determined from ready-to-eat (RTE) salad vegetables BJM
Taban,Birce Mercanoglu; Aytac,Sait Aykut; Akkoc,Nefise; Akcelik,Mustafa.
In the last decade, ready-to-eat (RTE) salad vegetables are gaining increasing importance in human diet. However, since they are consumed fresh, inadequate washing during processing can bring on some foodborne illnesses, like salmonellosis, since these food items have natural contamination from soil and water. During 2009-2010, a total of 81 samples were purchased arbitrarily from local markets in Ankara, and were examined for Salmonella contamination. Salmonella screening was performed by using anti-Salmonella magnetic beads system and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identification of the suspected colonies. Then, the antibiotic resistance profiles of four Salmonella strains identified (strains RTE-1, RTE-2, RTE-3, and RTE-4) were also investigated, since...

Chemical amendment and phytostabilization of an industrial residue contaminated with Zn and Cd Scientia Agricola
Santos,Fabiana Soares dos; Magalhães,Márcio Osvaldo Lima; Mazur,Nelson; Amaral Sobrinho,Nelson Moura Brasil do.
Phytostabilisation of a contaminated soil with heavy metals is considered a very appropriate technology to reduce erosion and dispersion of contaminants. A greenhouse study was conducted to evaluate the effects of both chemical amendments (calcium silicate and brewery sludge), and phytoremediation using the grass Brachiaria decumbens, on an industrial residue contaminated with Zn and Cd (industrial residue). Industrial residue samples placed into 30 L containers were amended with 20% brewery sludge, calcium silicate (2%, 3%), and 20% of brewery sludge + calcium silicate (2.5%, 4%), and were compared to the control treatment (non-amended residue). After pH stabilization, B. decumbens plants were grown on all treatments in order to evaluate the ability of...

Coliform density in oyster culture waters and its relationship with environmental factors PAB
Mignani,Luciene; Barbieri,Edison; Marques,Helcio Luis de Almeida; Oliveira,Ana Julia Fernandes Cardoso de.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the total and thermotolerant coliform densities in the oyster culture water of Cananeia, SP, Brazil, correlating these densities with environmental variables and tidal variations. Superficial water samples were collected in two tide conditions (spring and neap) from three areas of Cananéia municipality (Mandira, Itapitangui and Cooperostra). The three studied areas showed good conditions for the culture regarding coliform densities. The two tidal conditions differed significantly as to total coliform concentration; however, the same procedure was not performed for thermotolerant coliforms. No correlation was observed between water temperature, pH, and concentrations of total and thermotolerant coliforms. Coliform...

Treguier, Cathy; Schaeffer, Julien; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Cochennec-laureau, Nathalie; Le Guyader, Soizick.

Contamination of environmental surfaces by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in rooms of inpatients with MRSA-positive body sites BJM
Kurashige,E. Jessica Ohashi; Oie,Shigeharu; Furukawa,H..
ABSTRACT Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can contaminate environmental surfaces that are frequently touched by the hands of patients with MRSA colonization/infection. There have been many studies in which the presence or absence of MRSA contamination was determined but no studies in which MRSA contamination levels were also evaluated in detail. We evaluated MRSA contamination of environmental surfaces (overbed tables, bed side rails, and curtains) in the rooms of inpatients from whom MRSA was isolated via clinical specimens. We examined the curtains within 7-14 days after they had been newly hung. The environmental surfaces were wiped using gauze (molded gauze for wiping of surface bacteria; 100% cotton, 4 cm × 8 cm) moistened with...

Contamination of some aquatic species with the organochlorine pesticide chlordecone in Martinique ArchiMer
Coat, Sophie; Bocquene, Gilles; Godard, Eric.
Martinique is a French overseas department whose economy relies heavily on agriculture. Organochlorine pesticides, mainly chlordecone, were used for banana cultivation to eradicate banana weevil over a period of 40 years. Chlordecone is chemically stable, and has a strong affinity for fatty tissues. It is therefore able to bioaccumulate in animals and thereby represent a threat to ecosystems and man. Soils from banana plantations in Martinique are heavily contaminated with chlordecone. Possible transfer of these molecules from agricultural watersheds to the aquatic environment and the organisms that live in it is feared. The hypothesis that ecosystems of Martinique might be highly contaminated with this organochlorine pesticide was investigated. Chlordecone...

Contamination of water by pesticides: a case study of the potatoes processing ExtensaoRural
Forgiarini, Francisco Rossarolla; Baggiotto, Carine; Santana, Natielo Almeida.
Contamination of water by pesticides is one of the main environmental problems. Among the agricultural crops, potatoes stand out, as they employ a large quantity of pesticides throughout their production. This article aims to present a case study on the potato processing activity, discussing the environmental licensing process of the activity and the analysis of the impacts caused by the release of effluents into the environment. The effluent was collected in a sedimentation tank of an English-type potato processing industry, sent to the Pesticide Residue Analysis Laboratory for the detection of the possible pesticides present, being analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and characterized physicochemically through temperature,...

Controlled release formulations of herbicides based on micro-encapsulation Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Sopeña,Fátima; Maqueda,Celia; Morillo,Esmeralda.
Annual worldwide losses to weeds are estimated to comprise approximately 10-15% of attainable production among principal food sources. Worldwide consumption of herbicides represents 47.5% of the 2 million tons of pesticide consumed each year. However, the heavy use of herbicides has given rise to serious environmental and public health problems. It is therefore important to develop new herbicide formulations that are highly effective, that are safer (for the worker and for the environment), and that involve a low cost/production ratio. In this sense, Controlled release formulations of herbicides have become necessary in recent years, since they often increase herbicide efficacy at reduced doses. The present work reviews in detall the components of various...

Dépistage des sources de pollutions microbiologiques en Seudre amont et dans le bassin de Marennes Oléron ArchiMer
Auger, Christian; Courtois, Olivier; Kantin, Roger; Masson, Daniel; Piquet, Jean-come; Roesberg, Didier.
The oyster culture basin of Marennes - Oléron is characterized by the tastiness of its oysters and the good quality of its waters, and thus of its shellfish. On that account, the quasi-totality of the production areas are ranked A for non-burrowing shellfishes, thus confirming the privileged character of the basin. This microbiological and chemical quality contributing to the reputation of the basin's shellfish farms needs to be preserved. In this purpose, the Regional Shellfish Culture Section of Marennes - Oléron (SRC) approached the Ifremer in order to continue the monitoring of the microbiological quality carried out on different production areas susceptible to be affected by some bacteriological contaminations leading to a deterioration of the...

An international outbreak linked to oyster consumption involving a group of over 200 people in Italy and 127 total subjects in 13 smaller clusters in France was analyzed using epidemiological and clinical data and shellfish samples. Environmental information from the oyster-producing area, located in a lagoon in southern France, was collected to investigate the possible events leading to the contamination. Virologic analyses were conducted by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) using the same primer sets for both clinical and environmental samples. After sequencing, the data were analyzed through the database operated by the scientific network FoodBorne Viruses in Europe. The existence of an international collaboration between laboratories was critical to...

Environment and immunomodulation : effects of the soluble fraction of Norwegian heavy fuel on the immune system of Pacifc oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Bado-nilles, Anne; Auffret, Michel; Quentel, Claire; Le Floch, Stéphane; Arzel, Jacqueline; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Renault, Tristan; Thomas-guyon, Hélène.
Estuaries and coastal areas are often subjected to much pollution, including pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) produced by anthropic activities. Bay of Marennes-Oléron is an estuarine coastal zone in which there is a high level of aquacultural production and this has adverse effects in aquatic organisms. In fact, PAHs, which are widely spread throughout aquatic ecosystems, have a low polarity and so there is a clear tendency to bioaccumulate in marine organisms (1). The harmful effects of such contaminants on the organism's immune system, leading to a decreased resistance to pathogens, is a relatively new area of research and it still poorly understood. The aim of the present work was to detect the impact in vivo of PAHs on the immune...
